Delta Change Fee Policy 2025
Delta Air Lines eliminated change fees in September 2020 on most domestic and international tickets. This policy has remained in effect. Here's the full picture:
- Main Cabin, Comfort+, First Class, Delta One, Delta Premium Select: No change fee on domestic (50 states), Canada, Mexico, Caribbean, Central America, and most trans-Atlantic/trans-Pacific routes
- Basic Economy: Cannot be changed after the 24-hour free cancellation window
- Award Tickets (SkyMiles): No change or redeposit fees when changed within the standard policy period
Remember: no change fee doesn't mean no cost. If your new flight costs more, you pay the fare difference. If the new flight costs less, Delta issues the difference as an eCredit โ not cash.
Basic Economy โ The Exception
Delta Basic Economy is a fundamentally different product. Once the 24-hour window passes:
- Cannot be changed to a new date or time
- Cannot be cancelled for an eCredit
- Forfeiture is the only outcome if you don't fly
The only exceptions are if Delta cancels your flight or makes a significant schedule change โ in those cases, even Basic Economy qualifies for a full cash refund or free rebooking.
This is why we strongly advise against Basic Economy unless your plans are completely fixed. The savings over Main Cabin are rarely more than $20โ40, and the loss exposure on a change is the full ticket value.

Same-Day Delta Changes
Delta offers two same-day options:
Same-Day Confirmed Change
For an earlier or later flight on the same day, on the same origin-destination. Available starting at midnight on your day of travel. Costs $75 for non-Medallion members. No additional fare difference applies โ you pay only the $75 fee.
Same-Day Standby
Request to be placed on standby for an earlier flight at no charge. You keep your original confirmed seat and are only moved if a seat opens up on the earlier flight. This is a no-lose option if you'd prefer an earlier departure.
Medallion members: Silver, Gold, Platinum, and Diamond Medallion members get same-day confirmed changes for free. This benefit alone can be worth several hundred dollars per year for frequent travelers.
Medallion Member Change Benefits
- All Medallion tiers: Free same-day confirmed changes and standby
- Gold Medallion and above: Complimentary upgrade waitlist access; changes don't affect upgrade position if made more than 24 hours out
- Platinum Medallion and above: Change protection on award tickets beyond standard policy
- Diamond Medallion: Most flexible change and rebooking options; direct line access reduces wait times
Changing a SkyMiles Award Ticket
Delta award ticket changes are straightforward in 2025:
- No change fee for award ticket changes or redeposits
- You can change dates, times, or routes without penalty
- Miles are redeposited to your account if you cancel (also no fee)
- Taxes/fees paid may or may not be refunded depending on the specific change
Award space can be limited. If you can't find award availability for your new dates online, calling our specialists sometimes surfaces availability the website doesn't show.
Weather Waivers
During significant weather events, Delta issues travel waivers that allow all passengers to change flights with no fee and no fare difference. This is the best possible change scenario โ you essentially get to rebook for free into any available option.
Monitor delta.com/travel-information or sign up for Delta trip alerts to catch waiver windows. They typically open 2โ3 days before a predicted storm and close 24โ48 hours after the weather clears. Acting quickly is important as popular alternative flights fill fast under waivers.
Handling the Fare Difference โ Strategies
If your new flight costs more, you must pay the difference. A few strategies to minimize this:
- Change to a different time, not a different day. Moving from a peak AM flight to an off-peak afternoon on the same date often has no fare difference or a lower one.
- Check alternate nearby airports. Flying JFKโLAX instead of EWRโLAX might mean a lower fare on the new date.
- Use your eCredit strategically. If you have an eCredit from a previous change or cancellation, it can offset the fare difference on the new booking.
- Book a new ticket and cancel the old one โ if you're within 24 hours of the original booking or the cancellation would result in an eCredit worth more than the fare difference, this math sometimes works in your favor.
