The 24-Hour Flight Cancellation Rule: Everything You Need to Know

A federal rule that applies to every airline, every fare class. Here's how it works and how to use it strategically.

What Is the 24-Hour Rule?

The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) requires all airlines operating flights to, from, or within the United States to either:

  • Allow cancellation within 24 hours of booking for a full refund, if the booking was made at least 7 days before scheduled departure, OR
  • Hold the reservation at the quoted fare for 24 hours without charging

Most major airlines implement the first option. Either way, you get 24 hours of protection on any booking made 7+ days before departure.

Key Requirements

  • Applies to all fare types — including Basic Economy and other non-refundable fares
  • Flight must be 7+ days away from the time of booking — last-minute bookings don't qualify
  • Must cancel within 24 hours of booking — not 24 hours of departure
  • Applies to airline bookings — third-party OTAs have their own terms
  • Applies to U.S.-touching routes — international routes operated entirely outside the U.S. may not qualify

How to Cancel Under the 24-Hour Rule

  1. Find your booking confirmation (note the exact booking time)
  2. Log in to the airline's website or app
  3. Go to Manage Trips and select your flight
  4. Click "Cancel" — look for "Cancel for a full refund" option, not "Cancel for credit"
  5. Refund appears on your card within 7 business days (DOT requirement)

If the website only shows a credit option even within 24 hours, call the airline directly and explicitly state you are cancelling under the DOT 24-hour rule and want a cash refund. Our specialists at +1-888-570-4815 can also process this for you.

Strategic Uses of the 24-Hour Rule

Lock in a fare while you decide. Found a good fare but not 100% sure? Book it and use the 24-hour window to confirm your plans. Risk-free.

Book multiple options, keep the best one. If you're deciding between two itineraries, book both and cancel the one you don't want within 24 hours. Airlines don't prohibit this.

Price drop protection. If the fare drops within 24 hours of booking, cancel and rebook at the lower price. You don't lose anything — and you save money.

When the 24-Hour Rule Does NOT Apply

  • Flights booked less than 7 days before departure
  • Bookings made through third-party sites (check their terms — some do honor it, some don't)
  • International-only routes on non-U.S. carriers that don't touch the U.S.
  • Charter flights and certain non-scheduled operations
Pro tip: Book directly with the airline to ensure you can exercise the 24-hour rule cleanly. Third-party OTA cancellations often require going back through the OTA, which may have slower processing.
